Sustainability

"By which we mean": ...sustainable models for the sector, environmental standards, exhibition processes, climate education

For museums and galleries:

First Nations: Promote sustainable careers, addressing cultural load. Promote First Peoples approaches to caring for Country and place. Foster a network of support for Indigenous-led cultural organisations.

National Voice: Demonstrate the sector’s significance to the community, make a compelling case for continuous operational support (as opposed to project-specific), and highlight the role of museums and galleries in public education regarding climate and sustainability issues.

Strengthening Capacity: Enhance the capacity of small to medium-sized organisations by developing scalable business models, and foster digital literacy for sustainability. Provide  support for larger organisations to benefit the entire sector, encourage implementation of succession planning, including the offering of mentorship programs, and ensuring preparedness for potential disasters.

Inside AMaGA:

With almost 50% of AMaGA membership made up of small to medium organisations, either volunteer-run or with very few staff, we seek to understand how best to support these organisations to be sustainable on many levels -  financial, business, tourism and environmental sustainability and support for people. We have gathered comprehensive sector data through administration of the 2021/2022 Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) grant program and we are looking to combine this data with sector-specific research that addresses the smallest and most vulnerable members. AMaGA is also examining how our own organisational structures and programs might become sustainable - given limited resources. We also champion an ecosystem approach to the museum and gallery sector which looks to adapt to scale and share resources, expertise and experience across all tiers to avoid duplication and encourage professional/collegiate exchange in the interests of a sustainable sector.
