About the role:

The Collection Management Officer has responsibility for Victoria Police Museum's significant collection of social history objects, images and digitised items. The Collection Management Officer works in a team of seven headed by the Museum & Historical Services Manager.

This role is central to the work of this award-winning, Accredited Museum with emphasis on a major project underway to relocate the museum and collection storage to new premises. The new museum and collection store have both been redesigned in line with best-practice. This is a unique opportunity to support a business-critical project leading up to and including the museum's reopening in 2023.

Your duties will include:

  • Responsibility for managing an Accredited collection;
  • Cataloguing, conservation, storage and installation/deinstallation of collection items;
  • Relocation of the collection to new premises;
  • Supervision of collection movements rotating between storage and display or loan;
  • Triaging work with unregistered items;
  • Providing strategic advice on loans, donations, purchases and partnerships involving collection items; and
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, suppliers and other cultural institutions.
  • As the successful applicant, you will have:
  • Appropriate qualifications and/or experience in cultural heritage, museum studies or a related field;
  • An understanding of risk management for collections including environmental and security controls;
  • Expertise in small, medium and large object handling for storage, installation and deinstallation;
  • Expertise in object relocation procedures; and
  • Familiarity with museum cataloguing systems and digitisation best-practice.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, fixed term position available from 13 February 2023 to 5 January 2024.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
