Position: ANCA Inc. Gallery Manager

Salary: $63,333 – $75,000 p.a. pro-rata which equates to $38,000 – $ 45,000 + 10.5% superannuation.

Hours: Wednesday-Friday (22.5 hours per week) Some flexibility required to meet project needs including evenings and weekends.

Australian National Capital Artists Inc. (ANCA) is a not-for-profit artist-run initiative inCanberra. ANCA has 35 professional studios and an exhibition space. ANCAs governance is structured to ensure advocacy and representation of professional artists; The ANCA board (4 ANCA studio tenant representatives and up to five industry professionals) and Sub Committees (made up of ANCA tenants) contribute to the development of ANCA.

The ANCA Gallery Manager works with the ANCA Studio Manager at the ANCA Dickson Campus.

Duty Statement- ANCA Gallery Manager

The Gallery Manager works alongside the ANCA Studio Manager, and reports to the ANCA Board. It is an exciting role that demands creative thinking and strong communication skills. The Gallery Manager must be self-driven, have a strong work ethic, excellent time management skills, have a passion for the visual arts and an understanding of the role and operation of not for profit, artist-run initiatives.

Duties associated with this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the Gallery’s administration and exhibition program
  • Program the ANCA Gallery exhibition calendar in consultation with all stakeholders
  • Administer exhibition application rounds
  • Maintain communication with upcoming exhibitors
  • Oversee the coordination of exhibition openings/events
  • Induct exhibitors/volunteers in WHS procedures for the gallery
  • Assist exhibitors with installation of exhibitions
  • Set the lights for exhibitions
  • Provide a consistent and high level of ethical and professional standards


  • Coordinate / supervise ANCA Gallery volunteers, contract staff, and stakeholders
  • Contribute to strategic planning for ANCA
  • Manage Gallery budget as set by the ANCA Board
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Report to the Board monthly


  • Maintain the ANCA Gallery facilities, equipment, and amenities
  • Update WHS procedures and promote best practice
  • Coordinate all ANCA Gallery infrastructure maintenance and upgrades

Promotion and Media

  • Coordinate regular gallery promotion and advertising including media releases.
  • Maintain exhibition profiles on the ANCA website and social media platforms
  • Maintain relevant information on the ANCA Gallery website
  • Maintain Mailing List

Selection Criteria

Essential knowledge and skills

  • Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality annual exhibition program within an artist-run-initiative context or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience marketing and promotion exhibitions and art programs through both print and digital media.
  • Demonstrated experience writing grant proposal and acquittals.
  • Demonstrated experience developing strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including practicing artists, government representatives and other arts professionals.

Desirable skills and qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary degree in visual arts or arts management (Bachelor or higher)
  • Curatorial experience
  • Administration + Office management
  • Events coordination experience
  • Graphic design skills (Adobe Suite)
  • Website maintenance (Squarespace) and online marketing experience
  • RSA
  • First aid certificate
  • An understanding of WHS principals and first-aid training
  • Understanding of the non-profit sector and community-based organisations
  • Driver’s License
