The Cairns Historical Society's  vision is to Grow a vibrant, inclusive and professional cultural organisation that provides best practice exhibitions, collections management, research and conservation services, and which is accessible, responsive and engaging for local residents, children and audiences from around the world.

The Cairns Museum showcases material from the community’s collection and is the most recognisable face of the Cairns Historical Society. Renovated and reopened in 2017, the Cairns Museum’s brief is to reveal and past and engage with present of Cairns as a tropical city. In addition to the permanent galleries and retail offering, Museum activities include group tours, school tours, holiday programs and an annual program of Temporary Exhibitions.

Key Accountabilities

 

1.       EXHIBITIONS

1.1   Manage Cairns Museum’s temporary exhibitions schedule and associated budget

1.2   Lead the Society’s public interpretation and presentation of social history

1.3   Curate dynamic exhibitions and experiences inside and outside of the Museum using the Society’s own collection, working collaboratively with other organisations and in response to exhibitions being toured from other venues

1.4   Identify suitable touring exhibitions for the temporary gallery space

1.5   Identify and support exhibition development opportunities for volunteers

 

2.       PUBLIC PROGRAMS

2.1   Contribute curatorial content support for social media, media and website ensuring consistent brand management

 

3.       INTERNAL OPERATIONS

3.1   Provide daily operational cover as Museum Duty Manager and Back Up Coordinator for the Society’s Cyclone Plan as required

3.2   Provide Executive support and/or other duties as required

3.3   Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards including the Society’s Code of Conduct and other policies and guidelines

 

4.       COLLECTION ACQUISITIONS, RESEARCH AND ACCESS

4.1   Assist the Collection Manager in Initiating open, accessible collections that are welcoming to all, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders groups and other community groups

4.2   Assist the Collection Manager with the Society’s acquisition of cultural and material artefacts, through significance methodology, in accordance with the Collection Policy

4.3   Liaise with other relevant organisations as appropriate

4.4   Provide dynamic and inclusive significance training for volunteers
