The Financial and Asset Accountant is a part of the Finance Section within the Memorial, led by the Chief Finance Officer. The Section includes Budgets, Financial Operations, Financial Reporting and Analysis (FRA) and Procurement. The role encompasses both financial reporting and asset accounting responsibilities. Reporting to and with support from the Manager, FRA, the financial and asset accountant will primarily be responsible for the reporting of asset activities for the Memorial. These asset management responsibilities include the identification, recognition and reporting of asset movements and involvement in more complex tasks, such as, the timely capitalisation of capital projects of varying size and scale including the significant Memorial Development project, the reconciliation and reporting of capital work in progress and the carryout of revaluation activities.

In addition to these responsibilities, the role also involves monthly financial reporting to the Department of Finance, fringe benefits tax accounting and reporting, preparation and lodgement of the Business Activity Statement, analysis of financial information and other related functions. There is also the opportunity to assist with regular internal reporting to management and Council and the preparation of annual financial statements and subsequent audit activities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Key financial reporting responsibilities for the role include, but are not limited to:
    • completion of month end financial reporting processes (payroll, accruals, prepayments etc.);
    • preparation and submission of monthly financial reporting to the Department of Finance;
    • preparation and submission of monthly Business Activity Statements to the Australian Taxation Office;
    • assisting with the preparation of monthly and quarterly internal financial reporting to management and Council;
    • preparation of the annual Fringe Benefits Tax Return;
    • assisting with the preparation of the annual financial statements and the completion of the annual financial statement audit by the Australian National Audit Office; and
    • responsibility for the financial reporting of the Memorial’s Foundation.
  • Key asset accounting responsibilities for the role include, but are not limited to:
    • completion of monthly fixed asset accounting processes (acquisitions, disposals, depreciation etc.) including liaison with relevant asset related stakeholders across the Memorial;
    • maintenance of the Memorial’s fixed asset register;
    • carry out of capital project expenditure reviews to determine assets to be capitalised in a timely manner and amounts to be written off;
    • the revaluation of fixed assets as required complying with applicable Australian Accounting Standards; and
    • contributing to the development, implementation and review of policies, systems and procedures which identify, record, value, depreciate, account for and report on fixed assets ensuring that they comply with Australian Accounting Standards and Department of Finance policy and requirements;
    • Under guidance from the Manager FRA, develop and maintain strong internal and external business relationships to proactively identify, mitigate and resolve queries in a professional and timely manner.
    • Contribute to the identification and implementation of continuous business process improvements within the Finance team to ensure compliance with legislation, policies and procedures.
    • Opportunity to assist with other ad-hoc tasks and activities as required not only within FRA but the wider Finance Section.
