The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art collection at the National Gallery of Australia comprises over 7500 works and is the largest in the world. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Provenance Researcher (ATSIAPR), Funded by the Oranges and Sardines Foundation, will undertake detailed research into the history of ownership of relevant works of art in the national collection.
This is a new and exciting role, where you can contribute to establishing best practice guidelines for the legal and ethical management of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works of art in the Gallery’s collection. This will involve extensive community engagement and consideration of Australian and international industry standards and laws on cultural rights and property.
You will have the opportunity to review the collection over three years, researching and documenting works in the collection or proposed for acquisition or loan, clarifying their chains of ownership, ensuring proper and fit title, and assessing their ethical suitability for the national collection. You will also contribute to instituting procedures for Indigenous community engagement and industry-wide recognition of the Gallery’s proactive stance on ethical collection management practices.
This is a full-time, non-ongoing employment opportunity available within the Curatorial and Exhibitions Portfolio. The position will be filled using the Special Measure provision, which allows for the targeted recruitment of Indigenous Australians into the Australian Public Service. The vacancy is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The filling of this employment opportunity is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.
