Commonwealth Arts Department disappears

AMaGA was surprised and dismayed by the omission of any reference to the Department for the Arts in the Prime Minister’s announcement of his departmental restructures on 5 December. While we assume that arts legislation, functions and hard-working staff will shift to the new mega department with their Communications colleagues, the disappearance of the department itself is significant - in both substance and perception. An arts cog at the bottom of a mega department’s pecking order doesn’t generally get their new policy proposals promoted or funded, or their voice heard in other policy development across government. And externally, too, visibility matters. Respect matters. The creative industries matter. Our cultural lives matter.

AMaGA will continue to work with the Minister and across departments to advocate for arts, culture and heritage to be considered in all aspects of national policy.
