Join AMaGA and Jessica Coates for “Navigating copyright: What museums and galleries need to know”, the first of a two-part webinar series on the use and application of copyright in the cultural sector.

Copyright – it touches on almost all areas of practice in museums and galleries, yet many do not feel confident in dealing with it on a day to day basis. You have more rights than you may think. This webinar aims to arm museum and gallery professionals with the knowledge and skills to tackle copyright in their institutions. From exhibitions to open access, fair dealings to permissions, the basics to the latest updates - we will cover it all and take questions from participants.

“Being brave with copyright: Learning from your peers” the second of a two-part webinar series on the use and application of copyright in the cultural sector.

Cultural institutions have strong rights under the Australian Copyright Act to make use of their collections, even when permission is difficult or impossible to obtain - perhaps some of the strongest rights in the world. Yet many in the sector are unaware of this, or uncertain how it might apply to the projects they want to champion.

This webinar brings together experts from museums and galleries across Australia who have successfully leveraged their rights under the Copyright Act to do amazing things with their collections.

Jessica Coates is a copyright policy expert with nearly 20 years of experience working in Australia and overseas. She has previously worked as the Global Network Manager of Creative Commons, as a researcher and lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, and as a copyright, broadcasting and cultural sector policy adviser for the Australian government and private sectors. Throughout her career she has focused on working with and for cultural institutions, with her first job being at Questacon in Canberra. She has a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne and both a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (English Hons) from the Australian National University.
