Engaging your Community – New Times, New Strategies
The 2016 Museums Australia WA State Conference was held at the Perth Cultural Centre on the 12-14 October.
Thank you to all the delegates, speakers and volunteers who joined us for making the conference a highly engaging, and vibrant event!
The program combined international keynote speakers from the US and UK, and a diverse range of up to 80 speakers from Australia engaging us in interactive panel discussions, "mind blowing" museum experiences, raising profiles, using space creatively and wonderful historic tours around Guildford and Fremantle.
A Welcome Cocktail Reception was held on Wednesday 12 Oct at the State Theatre of WA with a special performance from the students of WAPPA, and the Conference Dinner on Thursday 13 Oct at the Dragon Palace in Northbridge, featuring Stella Huang playing the Chinese Dulcimer and Edward Chin showcasing the history and art of Chinese Calligraphy. Optional tours to Guildford and Fremantle were thoroughly enjoyable and well organised by the City of Swan and the City of Fremantle.
The overwhelming response from the delegates was that the MAWA Conference was the best and most engaging conference to date! We are very excited to keep the energy and enthusiasm in the Museum and Gallery sector alive.
A special thank you to our supporters: Lotterywest, the State Library of Western Australia, the Department of Culture and the Arts and the Western Australian Museum
Leading international Key Note Speakers from the UK and US will be sharing their experiences with us. We’re excited to announce keynote speaker, Dustin Growick, from Museum Hack NYC, an organisation that is successfully challenging how people experience museums, and special guest speakers Dr Elizabeth Merritt, from the Centre for the Future of Museums, and Tony Butler, from Derby Museums Trust.
These will be enhanced by a great range of local speakers covering topics such as digital approaches to engagement, reaching your community, reactivating your existing spaces, inventiveness on a budget, creative partnerships and inspiring children in your museum.
